Allstar third baseman Alex Bregman has reportedly received multi-year offers from the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers. With spring training around the corner, he's likely to decide soon.
Bregman played a pivotal role in the Houston Astros' success from the mid-2010s to the early 2020s. Bregman helped the Astros win two championships and led the team to seven consecutive American League Championships Series appearances from 2017-2023.
In his nine years with Houston, he consistently had elite-level numbers with a slash line of .272/.366/.849 while averaging 74 RBIs and 21 HRs a year. His best year came in 2019 when he drove in 112 runs and hit 41 bombs, putting him in second place in AL MVP voting behind Angels' Mike Trout.
Although he struggled somewhat last year with an OPS under .800 and a .260 average, he has shown in the past that he can hit the ball just as well as anyone.
Now a free agent, the 30-year-old is looking for a change of scenery as negotiations with Houston have reportedly stalled. With Boston, Chicago, and Detroit as his finalists, what could each team's lineup look like if they were to snag the star infielder?
Chicago Cubs:
Ian Happ OF
Alex Bregman 3B
Kyle Tucker OF
Michael Busch 1B
Nico Hoerner 2B
Seiya Suzuki DH
Pete Crow-Armstrong OF
Dansby Swanson SS
Miguel Amaya C
The Chicago Cubs are looking to make the postseason for the first time since 2020 and adding Bregman would help tremendously. A veteran player who knows how to win in the big moments would be huge for developing the Cubbies' young stars Pete Crow Armstrong and Michael Busch.
Plus, Bregman would be back with ex-Astros teammate Kyle Tucker if he were to sign on the North Side. Tucker was the first big move the Cubs made this offseason as they acquired him from the Astros in a three-way trade with the Yankees that landed Cody Bellinger in the Bronx.
Adding Bregman could be the final piece to give the Cubs the edge over the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.
Detroit Tigers:
Parker Meadows OF
Kerry Carpenter OF
Alex Bregman 3B
Riley Greene OF
Gleyber Torres SS
Colt Keith 2B
Matt Vierling DH
Spencer Torkelson 1B
Jake Rogers C
This lineup is very right-handed heavy, but there's no doubt that adding Bregman to Detroit would give the Tigers an extra 5-10 wins from last year's total of 86. The Tigers' front office also signed the power bat of infielder Gleyber Torres from the Yankees and brought back SP Jack Flaherty, who they dealt to the Dodgers at the trade deadline
This young team was one win away from going to the ALCS in 2024, so Tigers fans can only dream about where this team could go if Bregman came to the Motor City.
Boston Red Sox:
Jarren Duran OF
Trevor Story SS
Rafael Devers 3B
Alex Bregman 2B
Triston Casas 1B
Masataka Yoshida DH
Wilyer Abreu OF
Connor Wong C
Ceddanne Rafaela OF
The Boston Red Sox finished the 2024 season only 5.0 GB of a wildcard so it won't take much to make this team a playoff contender. A big move they made to increase their playoff odds was trading for all-star LHP Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox to bolster their starting rotation.
With Jarren Duran having a breakout year and Rafael Devers being in his prime, the addition of Bregman would be a scary sight for the AL East.
At the moment, sources are saying that Bregman is looking for a 5-6 year deal worth close to $150 million. All three squads have the money to offer Bregman what he wants so it's only a matter of time before he pulls the trigger on one of these deals.
With a decision looming, which team do you think is the best fit for Bregman?
Go cubbies!!!
